Why Booking Direct Gives You a Better Stay in Western North Carolina

We all know the names of the big online travel sites: Expedia, Booking.com, Tripadvisor, etc. (the “OTAs”).  Whenever you search for travel information, they are front and center.  Frankly, they are ubiquitous and, of course, a convenient source of travel ideas.  But regardless of this, we want to give you some insider information on why booking directly on the websites of small hospitality properties or through smaller, independent travel sites (recommendations below) gives you a better experience and a better stay.

When you search for the Andon-Reid or Waynesville lodging on Google, Tripadvisor, Bing, or other search engines, small properties often don’t have the financial muscle to outbid these online giants for important high-intent search terms (or even the branded terms like “Andon-Reid Inn” for example!).  Skip the ads at the top and scroll down to the verified site for the best information.

The long and short of it is that booking direct almost always gives you a better stay.

Not just a better price.

A better experience and more peace of mind.

As a small inn where the owners are also the innkeepers, communication, personalization, and preparation are everything. When you book directly, our small staff can take care of you the way we’re meant to — with attention to detail, clarity, warmth, personalization, and the kind of hospitality that simply doesn’t fit inside an OTA booking form.  There’s no one to call or email at the big sites, but the owners pick up the phone at most independent properties.

Here’s why booking direct matters more than ever in 2026.

1. You Get Clear, Direct Communication (No Middleman Delays or Filters)

The big sites often block or filter messages, which means guests sometimes miss:

  • Arrival instructions

  • Door codes

  • Dietary questions

  • Parking details

  • Early check‑in options

  • Weather or road updates

When you book directly, you get every message, exactly when you need it, and you can have a personal conversation with the innkeepers before your stay.

No delays. No missing information. No confusion at check‑in or about procedures or policies.

It’s the difference between arriving relaxed… or arriving stressed and confused.

2. More Room Choices and More Availability

Most properties don’t place all their rooms or calendar dates on the big travel sites.  Often, the best rooms are not available, or inventory is not available past 3 months or so into the future. Small property owners do this by necessity, since the big sites take a big commission.

When you book direct, you get to choose from everything a property has to offer, like:

  • The exact room, bed, view, and layout you are looking for.

  • The dates you want that fit into your busy schedule

  • Room enhancements and upgrades like chocolates, flowers, and bubbles.

  • One-night stays are only available on our website.

You know precisely what you’re getting — no surprises, no mismatches, no “this isn’t the room in the photo.”

3. You Get the Best Price (Always), Exclusive Discounts, and Cancellation Policy Options

All of our room inventory is available on our website, but we do not have all of our rooms on the big travel sites.  We also offer different types of discounts and cancellation options that aren’t available on the big sites.

Because when you book direct:

  • We don’t pay online travel agent (OTA) commissions

  • We can pass those savings to you

  • You get access to seasonal offers, packages, and discounts that aren’t available anywhere but our website.  For example:

    • We have discounts for weekday stays (Sunday through Thursday), extended stays (4-5+ nights), and we offer special seasonal discounts from time to time, plus military and loyal guest discounts as well.

    • We also have our “Peace of Mind” cancellation coverage that is only available when you book directly.  You can pay a little more per night to get the flexibility to cancel up to 24 hours in advance of your check-in and still receive a refund on your deposit.

It’s simple: direct is always the best value.

4. Your Stay Is More Personalized

Perhaps the most important reason nowadays to book directly is the improvement in information and communication.  When we receive your reservation directly, we can immediately:

  • Note your dietary needs

  • Prepare for allergies

  • Help plan hikes or scenic drives

  • Offer local recommendations

  • Suggest restaurants

  • Customize your stay

The booking forms on the big sites don’t give us much flexibility to ask for important details.  It’s also more difficult to match up reservations if you have stayed here before, meaning we might not be able to look back and find that you have particular dietary restrictions or an important pillow preference.

5. You Avoid Missing or Incorrect Information

As noted in item #1, the online travel agents often don’t provide us innkeepers with any information other than the traveler’s name.  In the modern world, this makes it very hard to make sure your stay is as stress-free as possible.  You may not be able to find the right information, which we have noticed often happens on indirect bookings.  The big platforms will:

  • Omit guest phone numbers

  • Send incomplete reservation details

  • Hide important policies

  • Auto‑fill incorrect guest names

  • Block pre‑arrival emails

This can lead to:

  • Missed check‑in instructions

  • Wrong arrival times

  • Confusion about breakfast

  • Surprise policies

  • Difficulty with directions to the property

Booking directly ensures everything is accurate, complete, and tailored to you.

6. You Support Local Businesses (Without Paying Extra)

When you book direct:

  • Every dollar goes toward your stay and supports our small local staff

  • Nothing is siphoned off by a corporation, and you speak directly with the owners when you have an issue with your reservation.  No far-off call centers of disinterested support staff.

  • You support local jobs, local suppliers, and local community partners.

It’s one of the easiest ways to support small hospitality — and it doesn’t cost you anything extra.  It used to be that small inns and B&Bs used the big sites as their online digital presence.  Not anymore.  Almost all small properties have their own websites, which are getting better and better every year.

7. You Get Help If Your Plans Change

If you need to:

  • Adjust dates

  • Add a night

  • Arrive early

  • Change rooms

  • Ask a question

We (the owners) can help instantly as we pick up the phone when you call.  No call centers.   No distracted, disinterested phone or chat agents. Plus, you can email or text us as well, whichever is most convenient for you.

Direct booking = direct, engaged support, and local advice.

8. There’s So Much More Information on our Website

We can only input a limited amount of information on the big travel sites.  We have a specific number of boxes we can check and characters we can input.  Some of the sites don’t even let us describe our own property and/or use AI to summarize things, often inaccurately.  On our own website, we have a full canvas for which to tell the story of our Inn and help you feel comfortable with what you are booking.  We can put more pictures and describe things in such a way that often don’t fit into the standardized fields allowed by the online gatekeepers.  If you want to learn about the area you are visiting, there’s just no better place to gather information than through our direct website.

Final Thoughts: Your Best Stay Starts With a Direct Connection

Western North Carolina is a place of warmth, welcome, and genuine hospitality. When you book directly, you’re choosing the version of your stay that’s clearer, calmer, and more personal.  We can take care of you fully, from when you start researching your trip to the moment you head home.

Also, there’s a growing segment of smaller websites dedicated to helping smaller properties like us with direct bookings and tons of smaller regional sites with detailed travel information and direct links to independent travel options.  You might consider checking out sites like selectregistry.com, inndependentstays.com, and ashevillebba.com, or local or regional travel information sites like visithaywood.com, visitsmokies.com, or visitasheville.com.

If you’re planning a trip to Waynesville or Asheville this year, we’d love to welcome you and we want you to have the best stay possible.

If you book directly, it’s better for you and for us, and our local mountain community.

We hope to be able to host you soon!

–Your Innkeepers,

Brenda and Peter
